Harthal

Whats the concept of a harthal?

Tried googling and asking experts.None seem to have a concrete answer? How is todays harthal gonna solve petrol price hike?We have sent MPs to parliament to raise this there and find a solution right?Hows a harthal helping the cause than making lives more miserable?

Niyamasabha/parliament as the name suggest is for niyama nirmanam as far as i know..Its for creatively debating, discussing and arriving upon and amending laws which is benefitting people. If a new decision by the govt is not agreeable it shud be debated in parliament and all state assemblies.TV channels should show this live,do debates on the same in tv shows where common man can also participate thru phone/person. An amendment should be brought such within the existing system for me.

Whats the space for a harthal in all this positively? An endless strike till the needs are not met makes even more sense!whats point sitting at home, protest for a day, and moving ahead?

I think one good method to expose this mockery to even these parties is for the young india to register a new party, jus for namesake.not a party for revolution,change,improvement,development,..juz one like all others..Call harthals once in a week regularly, get all medias to report it..I am damn sure people will take the initiative to break the harthal.Once thats repeated a national party harthal mite also break!!But how practical is it is the question?:)

A start is all whats needed maybe!!One person… whoever…all of us..if we have a vision/dream we want to achieve..if we are prepared to spend some productive effecive time in a day from our job/family/entertainment for this goal..Every day..every year.. do it consistently all our lifetime..Without caring the result/fruit/success..
U may not see the result with your own eyes in your lifetime..but your future will defenitley benefit from it.

  1. Harthal was one of the major weapons used during our freedom struggle as part of Gandhiji’s civil disobedience methodologies. It was a great necessity at that time. But the difference is that today’s hartal is to make people suffer while that time it was for the good of people. I would really suggest these political leaders to find out a success rate of their hartals, means those hartals they’ve done and have found a result from it. Am sure it may not be more than 2-3%

  2. Thanks Arun?
Can you recall any one instance where harthal has found a solution for the issue from this 2 3 %?

  3. Can recall a couple of times, don’t remember petrol prices or bus fare which ended up in a slight recall of price. Like they increased 2-3 Rs and rolled back a rupee from it. Clever politicians. They’re always ONE in cheating poor public.

  4. Everyone including the people/politicians and ruling parties knows there is no use by these kind of dramas. I think we should stop boasting ourself as a democratic country ruled by THE PEOPLE (don’t mis-read me..I have never wasted my duty to take part in this democracy.). If you have brain and think too much on the system you will either end up in extreme Maoism or terrorism. So go home..kill your brain..sit like a dump and watch movies..read books..sleep..eat..go to office..get paid…and be a COMMON MAN.

Media is dead animal and I don’t expect any BIG CHANGES from these stereo typed medias other than creating controversies.

    🙂

  5. Arun,
dont think it was coz of harthal!was it?

  6. I remember it once I was in my pre-degree. But think it was regarding bus fare and not petroleum prices. I still remember we fighting with conductors on the afternoon, the fare was recalled. I think those days govt. was always putting a margin to cut down once a protest comes against. But this time it was really bad. Completely decentralizing the price of petroleum products I think is suicidal in a growing economy like ours. Remember in 2008-09 petrol price would’ve easily touched 75 per liter if there was no control by govt. Even if we learn to bear with petrol prices, diesel would be a big trouble. A consumer state like ours will have to pay huge price for it. Am sure consumables price will go rocket high with an increase in diesel price.

  7. Hi Renjith,

Currently I am working in an IT firm located at Cochin. Our Head quarter is in Ahmedabad (Gujarat). I started my career at Ahmedabad during the year 1996. I had been at A’bad for almost 7 years before I reached to Cochin. During these period, I have never see any Harthals or Bandhs. Yes, the city witnessed some type of communal riots and natural calamities…. but no HARTALS OR BANDHS…. today I called my couterparts at our Ahmedabad office to know about the status of todays Bharat Bandh since this city is ruled by BJP… but fortunately or unfortunately… they are not much aware about todays bandh and everything is going as usual in this city….

From all these what we can realise… Our god’s own country will never come out from these types of bandhs or hartals….. Though this state has very good potential for business… but unfortunately we all kearlites have no previlage to get this opportunity…… We can work under any pressure but only one condition…. the job location should be outside KERALA……

    God’s Own Country……..

  8. Pramod,
Is that reason many of my friends says:
    ” Gods Own Country..Devils’ own people” ??… 🙂
I am staying nearby otherwise a busy street in Bangalore, Marathahalli-Whitefield road. The busy junction near to my house is totally empty till now. I could see very few private cars..one or two BMTC buses..closed Malls, Bakeries…shops. This is first time in my last 6 years in Bangalore. Anyways, I enjoyed this unplanned holiday..:)..provided I have to work on next saturday.
“We can work under any pressure but only one condition…. the job location should be outside KERALA”- KERALA is supposed be a state where Keralites lives, right?? So how come we can put all the blame on Political system and enjoy ourselves in the comfort of our houses/flats…so if we don’t want to see these kind of strikes afecting normal lives..need to come front and fight against it. We have got a big attitude problem about Kerala.

  9. Can anyone list out the procedure to register a political party?Lets register one just for callign harthals as per our convenience:)

  10. @Ranjith: I think that will be the easiest thing in India 😉 Thats what the numbers show. Lets do it. You be the president, I’ll be the treasurer 😉 Our first take will be a “Hartal against Hartal”

  11. Oh sorry, the last post was mine. Forgot to fill in the details while commenting.

  13. Maashe..
We will call one hartal tomorrow againts todays’ hartal…:)
we can have some new forms of hartals…Online hartal..SMS hartal…every week we will spread the message to all groups through calling some hartals..This is the time to start a new party ..we will put the name All India Hartal Front-(Democratic) (AIHF-D)..Against all the bullshits including bandhs for stupid reasons…poilitical prostitution..bribes..terrorism..like what happened to Mr. joseph yesterday.

  14. […] up thoughts here Harthal Ranjith Sankar __________________ ഇനി നമുക്ക് […]

  15. Sijith,

Yes I too agree with you “need to come front and fight against such type of Harthals or Bandhs. But remember, as a common man, we have plenty of our own limitations… Now Kerala is ruled not by any Political Parties.. It is in the hands of Gundaas…. A normal person has no value….

By going foward, this state will destroy by them…. Noone can save….

  16. HARTHAL IS A MEANS OF PROTEST. I SUPPORT YESTERDAY’S HARTHAL AS IT HAS A REASON. I DON’T THINK THAT IT IS BAD.
IT’S A MEANS USED BY THE PEOPLE TO CONVEY THEIR MESSAGE TO THE GOVERNMENT OR TO THE COURT. JUST LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE, HARTHALS ARE ALSO MISSUSED BY SOME OF US. I DON’T THINK THAT HARTHAL’S SHOULD BE BANNED.

I SUPPORT HARTHALS, IF THERE IS A GOOD REASON TO CONDUCT IT.

SOME OF OUR MEDIA OPPOSE STRIKES AND HARTHALS. BUT DON’T FORGET THAT THESE
MEDIA PERSONS PUT THEIR HAND TOGETHER FOR THE EMPLOYEES OF THE NEW
INDIAN EXPRESS, WHEN THEY CONDUCTED A STRIKE. IF THEY HAVE A PROBLEM THEY CAN PROCEED WITH A STRIKE, BUT THE COMMON PEOPLE DONT.

I WOULD LIKE TO QUOTE A DIALOGUE FROM THE MOVIE ‘SWALE’ “ARANTA
AMMAKKU BHRATHU PIDICHAL KANAN NALLA CHELU”. I THINK THIS IS RELEVENT
IN THE CASE OF SOME MEDIA PERSONS WHEN THEY ARE CONDUCTING CAMPAIGNS
    AGAINST STRIKES AND HARTHALS.

I HAVE QUESTIONS TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE BLINDLY OPPOSING STRIKES
    AND HARTHALS..

“IF YOU WERE BORN BEFORE OUR INDEPENDENCE, WOULD YOU HAVE BEEN WILLING TO STAND ALONG WITH THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS… ?”

  17. Nothing to say more if you compare with the blody hartals with our Freedom Movement…..

  18. ….. Harthal !!! Is that a problem ??? Politicians !!! Are they a problem ???…… The problem is with malayali’s mindset. Why the hell is he is responding to it ?. Don’t tell that they will beat you up, there are no transport facility et al…. They are only handful but we are stateful. Learn from the neighbours and be a rebal…
